The town and harbour

Harbour Street, the Horsebridge, Island Wall and the old town's tight Victorian and fishermen's cottage plots. Much of this area sits inside the Whitstable Conservation Area - work on any tree over 75mm needs six weeks' notice, which we file on your behalf. Gardens here are small, often walled, and take the full force of onshore wind straight off the harbour.

• Harbour Street / the Horsebridge - commercial frontages and cottage gardens, CA-covered, salt exposure severe.
• Island Wall - waterside terraces, some of the most exposed gardens in the town.
• South Street and Oxford Street - Victorian terraces set back from the front, moderate exposure.
• Borstal Hill - higher ground above the town, more sheltered than the seafront but still windswept.

Tankerton

The seafront suburb east of the harbour, known for the beach huts along the Tankerton Slopes and the shingle spit called the Street. This is the most exposed ground we work - hedges facing the water here take a battering every winter that a Chestfield garden two miles inland never sees. Read the salt scorch guide.

• Tankerton seafront / the Street - maximum salt exposure, windbreak hedging essential.
• Tankerton Slopes - steep gardens above the beach huts, thin soil over chalk in places.
• Marine Parade and Tower Parade - slightly more sheltered but still coastal-grade wind.

Chestfield and inland Whitstable

South of the railway line, around the golf club and out toward Chestfield proper. Heavier clay and brickearth soil that holds moisture, less salt exposure, and a much wider range of species that thrive without a fight. Larger gardens, more mature planting, more room for formal topiary and taller boundary hedges.

Seasalter and Swalecliffe

Seasalter is the low-lying marshy coast running west toward Faversham, exposed and often windswept with a mix of shingle and reclaimed marsh soil. Swalecliffe sits between Whitstable and Herne Bay, moderately exposed with a mix of post-war suburban planting.

• Seasalter - exposed, low-lying, salt-tolerant species essential near the sea wall.
• Swalecliffe - moderate exposure, standard suburban privet and leylandii common.

Western Herne Bay

We also cover Hampton, the westernmost part of Herne Bay right on the CT5/CT6 boundary - a short run past Swalecliffe, similar coastal exposure and the same salt-scorch pattern we see all along this stretch of the Thames Estuary shore.

• Hampton - seafront and pier area, exposed, same species pressures as Tankerton.

Our standard round covers CT5 in full, the western edge of CT6 (Hampton and the Swalecliffe fringe), and Seasalter toward Faversham. If you're further into Herne Bay proper, Faversham itself or Canterbury, we'll still quote - ask, and if it's a longer drive than usual we'll say so up front rather than pad the price.
