Hedge Browning on the Sea-Facing Side? Diagnosing Salt Scorch
You look at the hedge and one side is bronzed, curled and dropping leaf while the other side is fine. If that hedge faces the water anywhere from Island Wall to the Tankerton Slopes, you're very likely looking at salt scorch, not a disease. Here's how to confirm it and what to do next.
Quick diagnosis
Symptom: browning, bronzing or leaf drop concentrated on the side of the hedge that faces open water or a prevailing wind gap, with the sheltered side staying green.
- If the pattern is strictly one-sided, worse after a winter gale, and the hedge is within a few hundred metres of the sea wall
- → Salt scorch. Skip to "Confirming it's salt" below.
- If both sides are affected evenly, or the browning shows as patches rather than a directional gradient
- → More likely disease or a root problem - see dying on one side for the fuller differential.
- If it's specifically box hedging with fine webbing in the canopy

Why this happens here specifically
Whitstable and Tankerton face north across the Thames Estuary with very little land between the garden and open water. Onshore wind picks up fine salt spray off the sea and carries it inland, sometimes hundreds of metres, especially during winter gales when wave action throws spray high enough to catch the wind. That spray settles on foliage, and salt draws water out of the leaf tissue through osmosis - the same mechanism that makes a slug shrivel on a salted path, just slower and less dramatic on a leaf.
The result is a scorched, bronze-to-brown look concentrated on whichever face of the hedge took the direct hit. Because wind and spray travel in a fairly consistent direction along this stretch of coast, the damage pattern is usually clean: one face cooked, the other largely untouched.
Confirming it's salt
Three checks, in order of usefulness:
- Timing. Salt scorch shows up most after a storm or a run of strong onshore wind, particularly in winter and early spring. If the damage appeared within a week or two of a named storm or a spell of gales, that's a strong signal.
- Pattern. Genuine salt scorch respects wind direction, not plant biology. It doesn't follow branch structure the way a fungal infection spreads from an entry point, and it doesn't cluster around the base the way a root problem does. It reads as a directional gradient across the whole hedge face.
- Taste test (genuinely, this works). Run a damp finger across a few scorched leaves after a dry spell and touch it to your tongue. A faint salt taste, especially compared to leaves on the sheltered side, all but confirms it.
The three fixes that actually work
1. Wash it off, but only sometimes
A gentle hose-down with fresh water after a salt event can rinse residue off the foliage before it fully draws moisture out of the leaf, if you catch it within a day or two. Past that window the damage is already done and washing won't reverse it - it just stops compounding.
2. Prune the dead growth, don't fight the whole hedge
Scorched leaves that have already browned won't green up again. Once the immediate salt event has passed and new growth starts (usually spring), we prune out the dead material to let the plant put energy into fresh growth rather than maintaining damaged tissue. 3. Accept the diagnosis and change the species, if it's recurring
If the same hedge scorches badly every winter, the honest fix usually isn't more washing and pruning - it's recognising the species is fighting a losing battle against its position. Beech, hornbeam and most yew struggle on a direct seafront plot. Escallonia, Griselinia littoralis, tamarisk, elaeagnus and hawthorn all tolerate salt-laden wind well and are the species we'd actually specify for a Tankerton seafront or Island Wall boundary. Planting one of these as the outer, exposed layer (even in front of an existing hedge as a windbreak) protects whatever's behind it.
A note on the Whitstable Conservation Area
If your hedge is inside the harbour or old town conservation area boundary and includes any mature tree with a stem over 75mm at chest height, replacing or hard-pruning it needs six weeks' written notice to Canterbury City Council under section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 first. Routine hedge-species pruning is exempt. We check the map before quoting any salt-scorch remedial work in that area.
