One Side of the Hedge Is Dying and the Other Isn't. Here's Why.

This is one of the most common calls we get, and one of the easiest to misdiagnose from a distance. A hedge with healthy growth on one face and thin, browning or dead growth on the other has a short list of real causes - and each one needs a different fix. Guessing wrong wastes money.

Quick diagnosis: work through these in order

1. Does the affected side face open water or a wind gap?
→ Check for salt scorch first. See the salt scorch guide - it's the single most common cause on this coast.
2. Is the affected side also the shaded side (a wall, fence, extension or overhanging tree)?
→ Shade dieback. See "Cause 2" below.
3. Is there a driveway, patio or recent building work on the affected side?
→ Root compaction or root damage. See "Cause 3."
4. Does the dying side show a gradual creep along the hedge from one point, rather than a clean directional split?
→ Possible root disease (phytophthora or verticillium wilt). See "Cause 4."
5. Is it box hedging with fine webbing visible in the canopy on the affected side?
→ Box tree caterpillar, which often defoliates unevenly depending on where the moths first laid eggs. See box hedge care.

Cause 1: salt scorch (the coastal default)

If the affected face looks out toward the water anywhere from the harbour round to Tankerton, salt-laden wind is the first thing to rule out, not the last. It's covered in full in our dedicated guide, including the taste-test check that confirms it in under a minute.

Cause 2: shade dieback

A hedge that gets full sun on one face and deep shade on the other from a wall, a new extension, or a mature tree that's grown up over the years will thin out on the shaded side over a season or two, not overnight. This is common in the tighter plots around South Street and the old town, where an extension or a tall boundary fence can throw shade a previous owner never had to plan around.

The fix: if the shade source is removable (an overhanging branch, for instance) removing it usually lets the hedge recover on its own over a season. If the shade source is permanent (a wall, a neighbour's structure), the honest fix is often replacing that section with a shade-tolerant species - Euonymus japonicus and yew both cope with partial shade better than privet or leylandii.

Cause 3: root compaction or root damage

A driveway laid, a patio extended, or utility works trenched along one side of a hedge line compacts or severs roots on that side. The visible symptom often lags the actual damage by a season or two, which is why people are frequently surprised: "we didn't do anything to the hedge, it just started dying." The building work happened last spring; the dieback shows up this summer once the root system genuinely can't support the canopy above it any more.

The fix: there's no reversing root damage that's already happened, but preventing further compaction (no more vehicle parking over the root zone, for instance) stops it getting worse. Depending on severity, the affected side may partially recover once stress reduces, or the hedge may need renovation pruning to bring the canopy back into balance with a reduced root system.

Cause 4: root disease

Phytophthora root rot and verticillium wilt both cause progressive one-sided or patchy dieback that spreads gradually rather than appearing all at once. Phytophthora favours waterlogged ground - more of a risk on the heavier clay soils inland toward Chestfield than on the free-draining shingle near the coast. It typically starts at one point and spreads outward along the hedge line over subsequent seasons, which is the key difference from salt scorch's clean, static, wind-direction pattern.

The fix: there's no reliable chemical cure for either disease in a garden hedge setting. Removing and disposing of affected material (not composting it, which spreads the pathogen), improving drainage where waterlogging is the driver, and replanting with resistant species after a gap season is the realistic path.

Cause 5: box tree caterpillar (box hedges specifically)

If it's box hedging and the "dying" side shows fine grey-white webbing when you push your fingers into the canopy, this is almost certainly box tree caterpillar rather than a site-condition problem. It often defoliates unevenly because moths lay eggs in clusters rather than uniformly across the hedge. See our box hedge care page for the full treatment and replacement options.
